Aventura to Fort Lauderdale by train moves into federal engineering
· Planned, in engineering; not under construction
The Federal Transit Administration is the U.S. government agency that helps pay for public transit. It has just moved Broward County’s plan for a commuter train from Aventura to Fort Lauderdale into its engineering stage, and it expects to contribute $164 million. It is real progress, not a groundbreaking.

The headline
Engineering phase, with federal money anticipated
Broward Commuter Rail South has entered the Federal Transit Administration’s Engineering phase, the FTA announced on October 23, 2026. The FTA anticipates $164 million in federal funding, subject to financial, technical and legal requirements and to funding by Congress.
Engineering lets the project advance design and prepare for construction. It does not mean construction has started, and a final federal grant agreement has not been signed.
The planned line would use the Florida East Coast Railway corridor, the tracks Brightline already uses, between Aventura in Miami-Dade and Fort Lauderdale, with recommended new stations in Hollywood, near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and in South Fort Lauderdale.

Why it matters · Our view
Aventura is where Miami-Dade meets Broward, and the coast between Aventura and Fort Lauderdale has no commuter train today. Together with Miami-Dade’s planned Downtown–Aventura line, this would be part of a continuous coastal commuter route. Reaching federal engineering makes it more concrete than a long-term vision, but the money and the start date are not locked in.
Still to be confirmed
A final federal grant agreement and appropriations by Congress; an agreement on running trains on the shared tracks; a construction start; and an opening date.
