Miami This Week — October 13, 2026
Miami’s next chapter is taking shape through education, technology, and infrastructure. This week, we’re looking at a planned research campus in Wynwood and the I-395 project reshaping connections through downtown.
Story 1 · Technology and education
A new research campus is planned for Wynwood
Carnegie Mellon University announced plans for Carnegie Mellon University Miami, a new campus in Wynwood. The university says the $3 billion gift includes $2 billion to launch the Miami campus. Plans call for construction to begin in 2027 and the first students to enroll in 2028, subject to regulatory approvals. The planned campus is expected to include research labs and venture studios.
Why it matters
A research campus could bring students, researchers, employers, and new ideas into closer contact in Miami. The announcement describes a plan: the campus, its construction schedule, and any economic effects are not yet completed or guaranteed.
Story 2 · Infrastructure
Connecting Miami: the I-395 Signature Bridge and current detours
The Connecting Miami project rebuilds sections of I-395, S.R. 836, and I-95. The project team describes a planned 1,025-foot Signature Bridge with six arches. Its project page currently lists late 2029 as the anticipated completion and $866 million as the project cost; both are estimates.
Traffic update · October 11
The project’s October 11 traffic alert lists overnight closures of the northbound and southbound I-95 ramps to westbound S.R. 836 from October 12 through October 16, between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Traffic schedules can change, so check the official alert (opens in a new tab) before you travel.
Why it matters
This is a major transportation project, but it also affects local access and neighborhood connections. The project plans include reconnecting NW 2 Avenue beneath I-395.
